Will India soon become Asia's biggest solar PV market?
Hyderabad - Rotterdam; 19 January 2009
Solar photovoltaic energy (PV) is one of the most promising renewable energy sources. In 2008, the global solar photovoltaic energy market grew by more than 4000 Megawatts, 45% more than in 2007. The value of the international solar energy business exceeded 20 billion dollars in 2008. With solar modules rapidly decreasing in price, many new markets are expected to emerge. India is one of the promising markets, with rapidly growing demand for electricity and excellent solar insulation conditions. On 18 February 2009, an international conference in Hyderabad, organized by SolarPlaza, will discuss solar PV business opportunities in India.
The National and Indian State governments have launched programs to stimulate large scale PV application in India. On 7 January 2009, the State government of Gujarat launched its new 'Solar Power Policy' plan, including incentives for the development of at least 500 Megawatt solar PV power. In Rajasthan, more than 1500 Megawatts of projects were submitted for incentive approval. Government and solar industry representatives, consultants and project developers will address the following questions during the conference: Will India soon become the largest PV market in Asia and one of the major PV markets in the world? What incentives are on offer in the various States, and what are the market experiences and opportunities? What is the feasibility of multi-megawatt solar power plants in India? And what is happening in the Indian solar industry?
Several Indian PV manufacturers have started or expanded solar module production capacity. Manufacturers such as Solar Semiconductor, XL Telecom and Moser Baer focus not only on domestic market sales, but on export to European and US markets as well. India stands before the dawn of a rapid-moving solar industry and market development, which offers lots of new business opportunities.
The international conference in Hyderabad will include a networking lunch and drinks reception. It will offer a platform to learn about new business opportunities, and to meet experienced international PV business partners. These international PV executives will participate in the PV trade mission to India organized by SolarPlaza (16-20 February). They will include CEOs, Business Development Managers and other senior solar experts. The group of international PV business people will visit emerging crystalline and thin-film module manufacturers and take part in the Vision Summit of the Indian Semiconductor Association (ISA). The green energy session of this event (17-18 February) will offer opportunities to meet ISA-members. Partner ISA expects a growing interest for PV among its semiconductor and solar industry members. You can register for the conference at www.pvtourindia.com. The online Indian web portal Solar India Online (www.solarindiaonline) is the media partner for the Hyderabad PV conference.
